II Oral Presentation

I Oral Presentation

Corporal Punishment

When I was a child I remember that my mom used to spank me when I disobeyed. It was painful but I learned. Today, I see parents hit to their kids. It’s sad to see that because it’s observable the aggression.

For this reason I think that there are limits. It’s different to spank sometimes that to hit our children. Psychologists think that to spank is not recommended but in some cases, the words aren’t enough efficient. It’s necessary that children learn through love and peace. To spank them have to be the last recourse.

For other part, I think that parents have to be more patience and they have to control their emotions and to be more emphatic with their children because kids learn quickly about violence and it can possible that they learn it from their parents.

Finally, it’s our task think about it. Children who their parents hit them are more vulnerable to be insecure persons in a future, so the damage is not only physical, it’s psychological too.

An incovenient truth

It’s very sad to see how the global warming is destroying our home. Gases in the Earth’s atmosphere are challenging our typical lifestyle. How we saw in the documentary, EE.UU is the country which more damage has done; it means that this country doesn’t have enough conscience about our home.

But what’s going on in Costa Rica? I think that almost nobody has enough knowledge about global warming but they can see the serious challenges because even me, we see that our typical weather it’s not the same. My town, for example, which has sunny and rainy days. The last days, I saw that mornings were rainy and the half-days were sunny. I have lived in my town 19 years and I know that it has changed a lot.

Another example, I live near the mountains and the air is cool but when I travel to San Jose I can see the change. The smoke is terrible. There is too much traffic and life doesn’t feel relaxing here. It can be possible that our lifestyle is affecting our home. So, what’s going on with us?

Humurous letter Dr. Heart

Dr. Heart, I’m a confused girl. I’m 21 years old. I’m studying medicine. In my first class I met a Spanish guy. I don’t know what happened but I fell in love with him. In the second class, he invited me to his apartment. I was nervous. When I arrived he cooked me risotto. It was a good meal. In this evening, we enjoyed a lot. Then, he invited me again. In this time, he kissed me. I don’t know but I knew that he was the man of my life.

Six months later, I still with him but he doesn’t have a relationship with me because he doesn’t believe in that. I don’t care because actually is normal to have an open relationships. For this reason, we aren’t together in class, because we don’t mix the personal relationships with the professional ones. I guess so. Now, I’m confused because he will go back to Spain in two months. Is our relationship strong enough?

Dr. Heart: Dear confused girl. I think that it isn’t normal to have free relationships. Middle terms don’t work, for this reason, you are or you aren’t. You have only these options. If you want to create a stable relationship you have to build confidence and respect with your partner because you don’t believe in open relationships. You don’t have to lose your identify and limits for another person. Think about what do you want and what don’t you want. Your relationship needs more roots and firmness. Is this person convenient for you?
Only you know that. Blessings.

A difficult decision

When I was 18 years old I won a scholarship at ULACIT. It was a great day. Since this moment, I started studying Psychology but my scholarship had requirements. The most important one is to be member of a Student Club. In this time, I chose Civic House Club. In this one, we went to Otto Hubbe School to give workshops to the students. I learned a lot with the children because the school is located in La Carpio and the people there have high rates of violence, for this reason, to work with them was a challenge.

It was beautiful to go on Tuesdays and see the children happy receiving the workshop. My workshop was about Emotional Intelligence and in this moment, I decided to work with children in a future because I saw that they need to know a lot about it.

But in my first period of this year I had to leave the Civic House because it schedule changed and I couldn’t continue with this Club. So, I had to choose another one. I had two Clubs to choose: the Environment Club and the Debate Club. I remember that in this time I went to talk with the Psychology Director and she advised me that the Debate Club was a good choice. So I think about it and I chose this one.

Now, I don’t regret have chosen the Debate Club. Now, I meet new excellent persons and I’m learning how to talk in public and how to support my opinions.
It was a difficult decision, but I learned from it.

An Original Story

The Little fox

Margot was a special child. When Margot was two years old, the parents left her in an orphanage. Since that, she started to see her life like a misfortune.
The other children always annoyed her because her hair was white and her ears were different, they told her: “you are old woman, you look old, and you look old and your ears are frightful…” and for this reason, she always cried.

Eleven years later, she realizes that her tears didn’t come out. –It can’t be possible- she said. So, she went to talk with the principal nun, Sister Josephine.

After that, they started to investigate Margot’s family. The next month, Sister Josephine found out that Margot’s parents didn’t have identify documents. –It’s look strange- said Sister Josephine, -maybe they are died. - So, we can’t do anything about it-

Meanwhile, it was snowing and Margot went to the orphanage’s yard. She felt alone and sad. –I’m not normal, I’m so different, I just want to run away… but in that moment, she listened: - she’s a rainbow, she’s a rainbow- Margot searched the voice and she found a little fox. The little animal ran and she followed it.
Then, she came in to a forest. It was bright and she said: -wooo what’s this? It’s magical and wonderful- The little fox answered: welcome to my world. We were waiting for you.
In this instant, she saw people come out from the trees. These people had white hair and fox ears.-I can’t believe that- said Margot.

Impact of tourism on the environment

I think that the impact of tourism on the environment has advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages are:

It increases economic activities. If you live in a beach, for example, probably you can find a job so much easier. Moreover, you can make a living by having your own business like selling souvenirs.
It gives the opportunity to know new places. People want to know new traditions and places, for this reason, tourism give them the best way to realize these dreams.

However, there are disadvantages:

Some places causes controversy, for example, nudist beaches.
Tourism can destroy the natural environment. Some cases there is too much commerce and people who don’t have enough resorts, therefore, they destroy the nature and don’t think in consequences.
All the time, tourism can help and destroy the world. It depends of our decisions and consciousness about the enjoyment of our environment.

Extreme Sport

This extreme sport it’s about people in special bicycle jumping around making the best tricks while going down rapidly the hill. This is an extreme sport that makes you really feel the adrenaline all over your body.

Even though, this one is very very dangerous because the person doesn’t have any protection, so, life is on the line putting the person body at risk.

This is one of the best sports on earth but also one of the most expensive and that not all the persons are going to experience because you have to be very brave in order to ride one of the bikes. It is also important to know that not in all the countries this sport can be practiced.

Report on crime in Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, crime is something that increases every day. Insecurity is one of the reasons; most of people have been robbed, abused or killed. Laws aren’t strong enough for the ones who have committed one or several crimes like the ones mentioned before. Most of the cases, guilty persons only go to jail for a short time and this affects the quality of life of the victims and the society as well.

For example, a young man killed a person who was 45 years old. This pitiful fact was in Guanacaste. The young wanted to rob the adult and this one didn’t let him. For this reason, the young person took a tube and he thumped it against the adult is head and after that, the young inserted him four stabs. The person died instantly. The young will be in jail for 3 years.

Now, relatives claimed that newspaper and other media take advantage of these situations and unfortunately, yellow press showed photos or different images that are uncomfortable for people to watch.

Finally, the president said that crime affects society on every aspect and it’s important to resolve all the necessities about this topic because is a real problem that has to be resolved as soon as possible.

Advertising

I think that some advertising takes advantage of the weakness of people. In this case, the advertisers want to express that if you drink ´´Heineken´´ you will be able to see or do these kind of things.

Moreover, they do not care about the negative consequences, like alcoholism, physical diseases, etc., they only think in how to make money.

It’s sad to see this kind of advertising, the advertisers are very creative and they should take advantage of this magnificent ability. It’s important to create knowledge in people, for example the use of condoms, prevent of smoking, etc.; and they have the tools to do it.

How can you helps to improve your language skills?

It’s difficult to spend time practicing English. Sometimes I make the mistake of using English language skills only when I attend English classes. I know that it’s bad and if I really want to learn this language, I must practice it without caring to how much time I have to spend out of class. It’s my responsibility.

Nevertheless, teachers have the same degree of responsibility because they ought to give us tools and advices about how to learn a better English language. For this reason, they should give dynamic classes and to b more creative because experience learning is more efficient than passive learning. In some cases, people don’t want to learn English because they have had a bad experience caused by their teachers and it’s sad to see that.

On the other hand, the program course must be more active. For example, I think that the final test should include an oral test. This is an important part that can’t be omitted because the learning has to be comprehensive.

Finally, I think that a good English learning depends of the inner motivation that each one has. If you want to learn it to earn more money, it could be hard to learn because this pressure could deflect your goal.

Dear Ms. Castro,

I think that your conference was very interesting. I didn’t know about the new study strategies. I love this new idea: to practice before studying theory.  Actually, I will try to apply it.

Now, people learn in different way. They learn for themselves. This advance shows the human ability to have a developming brain.

Full Introduction

My name is Dayanna Marín Mora. I'm 19 years old and I live in Coronado. I study Psychology and I love it very much.

In my free time I usually listen to music like alternative rock, jazz and instrumental music. Sometimes I read. My favorite writers are Paulo Coelho, Isabel Allende, Edgar Allan Poe and J.K. Rowling.I like to take photographs. Someday I would like to be a photographer.

I believe in God and I trust in Him. I think that He always is with us. Also, I like to read the Bible.

About my family, I live with my father and my two sisters. My mother lives in Cartago. They're very friendly. I have a boyfriend. He's cute with me.

About me, I think that sometimes I'm shy. I'm friendly and I like the peaceful life. I hate wars and all forms of violence. I think that people have to talk to resolve their problems, violence is not neccesary.

My dream is to become a good psychologist. I'd like to work with kids because I can prevent mental diseases from early ages. I would not like to work with adults because in some cases they're complicated. I love all about emotional intelligence and I hope that our schools can apply this topic in a future.

Finally, I wish I can travel someday. I hope to visit France, Spain and Japan.
